PCTA CONVENTION 2012: A GLITTERING 20TH YEAR CELEBRATION!
Twenty years and counting - a memorable event staged by and for the cable television industry. With a change in venue from Luzon to the Visayas, the Philippine Cable Television Association (PCTA) proudly unveiled the 20th edition of the PCTA Convention on March 21-23, 2012 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City.
With the presence of government regulators, industry leaders, key executives of companies supplying the industry, and hundreds of cable TV operators from all over the country, the 2012 PCTA Convention once again created a big impact - further highlighting the association’s strong leadership and clout.
Supported by the entire PCTA Board, three-time Convention Chairman Arnel Merilleno and the PCTA Convention Committee truly lived up to everyone’s expectations by coming up with relevant and comprehensive topics during the conference together with an exciting mix of participating companies displaying their latest programs, technologies and equipment at the exhibit.
To start-off the three-day event, the traditional PCTA Golf Tournament was held on Tuesday, March 20, at the Cebu Country Club. The fun event drew in thirty players from both cable companies and suppliers - each one played their best to bring home the championship trophy as well as the first-ever HBO-sponsored Enrique “Boy” Delos Santos Sportsmanship Award.
Later in the day, Home Shopping Network (HSN) hosted a Goodwill Snack party at the ballroom of Radisson Blu Hotel, and then during night, Platinum Sponsor Creative Programs Inc. (CPI) welcomed all the delegates to a grand party at the Cebu Yacht Club.
The Opening Day
The convention’s opening ceremony on March 21 took place at 9:00 o’clock in the morning with National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba as keynote speaker. Cebu City Administrator Jose Mari Poblete, who stood in for Mayor Michael Rama, and HBO Asia CEO Jonathan Spink also delivered the City Welcome Remarks and Inspirational Message respectively.
In his address, Comm. Cordoba congratulated the association for the milestone event and mentioned how vibrant the cable industry had been so far. He also assured the assembly of the agency’s solidarity with the cable TV industry in charting its future amidst concerns on several regulatory issues.
“Through the years, the partnership between the NTC and PCTA has also intensified. It would be good if we both use this positive energy in charting a future which will be fruitful for your industry. Let us all keep an open mind to ensure that business opportunities come our way,” Comm. Cordoba said.
The Opening Ceremony proceeded to the Exhibit Ribbon-cutting Ceremony which was graced by special guests Comm. Cordoba, Atty. Poblete, Mr. Spink, and ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio Lopez III, together with the members of the PCTA board.
Colorful and Exciting Exhibits
Thirty-six international and local companies took part in the exhibits, which included program providers, technology suppliers, and equipment vendors. Of special interest were the attractive presentations of the major sponsors of the convention, namely, Platinum Sponsor Creative Programs Inc. (CPI); Gold Sponsors Fox international Channels (FIC), Asian Cable Communications Inc. (ACCION), TBN Asia, and Cable Box Office Shows and Systems (Cable Boss); Silver Sponsors HBO, Al Jazeera Media Network, TV5 Monde, Channel News Asia, C-Cor Broadband Inc., and France 24. Delegates were kept busy and on their toes inside the exhibit hall with several celebrities in attendance, as well as the big raffle prizes and unique giveaways handed out by the participating companies.
Informative and Eye-opening Talks
The plenary presentations and discussions were likewise well-attended at the Niña Ballroom as technical and management topics were presented and discussed by international experts and technocrats. The topics focused on cable TV digitization, the National Broadband Plan, marketing strategies, subscribers’ billing system, and CATV system valuation.
On March 23, the topics discussed were personal finance management, Total Quality Management (TQM), and harnessing renewable energy for CATV. For the CSR session, the Knowledge Channel Foundation, represented by its president, Ms. Rina Lopez-Bautista, presented its program.
The roster of speakers included Mr. Kenichi Yamagata (Itochu Cable Systems Corp.), Deputy Commissioner Louis Napoleon Casambre (ICTO), Prof. Regina Dy (De La Salle University), Mr. Michael Risos (C-cor Broadband), Mr. Garrick Russel (GLDS), Mr. Mike Savage (Media Partners Asia Ltd.), Mr. Jason Chao (CISCO), Mr. Armand Bengco (Colayco Foundation), Ms. Anne Belmonte, Engr. Elpidio Paras (Parasat Cable TV) and Engr. Romeo Zerrudo (Zenergy CATV Network).
Aside from the learning and information, the delegates also had a grand time at the conference because of the prospect of winning one of the five (5) mobile telephones and two (2) LCD TV sets that were raffled off at intervals.
Fellowship Night held “Under the Sea”
The Oakridge Pavilion tent was transformed into an underwater seascape for the PCTA Fellowship Night on the evening of March 22. “Mermaids” welcomed all the delegates and participants as non-stop music from Centerfold band, courtesy of Viva/PBO, made everyone swoon and chill out.
A superb spread of local and international food courtesy of dinner sponsor, SES, nourished everyone while drinks from bar sponsor, Jack TV, flowed all through the night. Cable Boss and CPI also provided the famous Cebu lechon to the enjoyment of everyone.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama made up for his absence during the opening ceremony by coming to the Fellowship Night and personally greeting all the attendees. Convention Chairman Arnel Merilleno and PCTA President Elpidio Paras also awarded the major sponsors with a Plaque of Appreciation for their support.
The highlight of the party was the raffle draw and there were plenty of prizes given away including twenty (20) 32-inch LCD TV sets from PCTA, DZMM Teleradyo, and Cable Boss, mobile phones from Starmobile, and premium gifts from Globe Business Center.
9th Cablelympics Winners
Another anticipated event during the convention is the Cablelympics, a quiz-show type competition participated in by technical personnel from different cable companies in the country. Marking its 9th edition this year, Cablelympics attracted 29 contestants from 18 cable companies who answered technical questions in two stages, and did hands-on outside plant assembly in the final stage.
In the end, Mr. Manolo Umali of Mabini CATV Inc. emerged as the champion, besting 28 other contestants for the award. Second and third place winners respectively were Mr. Dominique Cimagala of Morning Star Cable TV and Mr. Dindo Amoyo of Negros Cable TV. Cablelympics was conceived to test the technical skills and knowledge of the people working in the cable industry. The winners each received a medal and cash prize, while all contestants received t-shirts from PCTA.
PCTA Automated Election
Many of the association’s members were pleasantly surprised when they learned that the automated election system will be used for this year’s election of board members. PCTA President Elpidio Paras explained the transition as the organization’s way of moving with the times, in the hope that the election procedure will become faster and more efficient for everyone.
In spite of several incidents that delayed the procedure, the members patiently waited and participated in the exercise to show their full support to the initiative.
The body elected the following as members of the PCTA board for the fiscal year June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013:
